Lenovo ThinkPad T420s - UniBeast 1.5.3 ML

If you are trying to boot from a UniBeast 1.5.3 created flash drive, and you happen to have adsdt.aml in /Extra, rename it or remove it...

Otherwise, you will encounter the following KP:
"Should have 4 threads, but only found 5 for die 0"

At first, I thought it was because I had updated the BIOS on the ThinkPad that caused the issue, but realized that I made the flash drive for my desktop...  Searching for "should have 4 threads, but only found 5 for die 0" didn't turn up a lot of hits, but just wanted to make sure that everyone knew how to get around this hiccup.

Desktop Specs:
  • Gigabyte GA-Z68-UD3H-B3 REV 1.0
  • Intel Core i7-2600K 3.4GHz
  • Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M4A1600C 16GB 4x4GB Kit
  • eVGA Geforce GTX 580 1536MB
  • Intel 320 Series SSD 160GB x 2
  • Western Digital Scorpio Black 2TB 6GB/s x 2
  • Hitachi GST 2TB 6GB/s x 2
  • LG WH12LS39 Blu-ray Rewriter

USB 3.0 Flash Drives by Patriot Memory

I would definitely recommend the following USB 3.0 Flash Drives from Patriot Memory
  • SuperSonic - 32GB and 64GB
    • Pros
      • Decent Read and Write Speeds
        • Even under USB 2.0
      • Single Chip Design
      • Quad-Channel Technology
    • Cons
      • Cost $$$
      • Requires USB 3.0 to realize full potential
  • SuperSonic Magnum - 64GB and 128GB
    • Pros
      • Best Read and Write Speeds
        • Even Under USB 2.0
      • Single Chip Design
      • Eight-Channel Technology
    • Cons
      • Cost $$$
      • Requires USB 3.0 to realize full potential
  • SuperSonic Pulse - 4GB, 8GB and 16GB
    • Pros
      • Good Read and Write Speeds
        • Even under USB 2.0
    • Cons
      • Requires USB 3.0 to realize full potential

The drives listed above, if formatted properly, are definitely bootable from the Lenovo ThinkPad T420s and W520 via the USB 3.0 ports or through the USB 2.0 ports on the Lenovo ThinkPad X220.

Yes, that means that Windows Preinstallation Environment 3.x is bootable from a USB 3.0 flash drive provided that you have the USB 3.0 integrated into your WinPE build!!

Obviously, you can't get USB 3.0 speeds if you use UniBeast on any of drives listed above.

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s, W520 and X220

I tried using nawcom's MBR patch for 10.7.2, but I encountered some issues and thus I was forced to use the original Apple Store Mac OS X Lion USB flash drive with nawcom's MBR patch for 10.7.

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s
  • For some reason, nothing is displayed on the LCD screen and if you attach an external LCD through VGA or DVI, it appears as though it's a secondary screen to the right. So you can't see the primary display.
  • I've used a ThinkPad docking station too 4337-10U, but it doesn't do much of anything -
    • If anyone has found a way around this, I sure would like to know!!
Lenovo ThinkPad W520
  • This Lenovo has the NVIDIA Quardo 2000M Graphics Card, default setting in BIOS
  • Still need to use the original 10.7 GM release with nawcom's MBR patch, because these ThinkPad's have EFI capable BIOS, but freak's out if it finds a GPT formatted disk with an EFI partition at the front
  • I get random KPs on restarts, this is probably due to a non-existent DSDT
Lenovo ThinkPad X220
  • Installation works like a charm in terms of using tonymacx86 and MacMan's UniBeast 1.0 tool
    • Still need to use the original 10.7 GM release with nawcom's MBR patch, because these ThinkPad's have EFI capable BIOS, but freak's out if it finds a GPT formatted disk with an EFI partition at the front
  • VoodooHDA 0.27.3 causes a KP on boot, so you need to move it out of /S/L/E and install it upon logging in
  • I don't have a DSDT yet, but I'm working on that

Here are the specs on the ThinkPad's:
  • Lenovo ThinkPad T420s
    • Intel 2nd Generation Core i5-2540M 2.60GHz (Dual Core)
    • 6GB DDR3 Memory
    • Intel 320 Series 160GB SSD or Intel X25-M G2 160GB SSD
    • On-board Intel HD 3000 Graphics
    • One USB 3.0 Port (NEC/RENESAS)
    • Two USB 2.0 Ports
    • 14.0" HD+ 1600x900
    • 720P HD Webcam
  • Lenovo ThinkPad W520
    • Intel 2nd Generation Core i7-2760QM 2.40GHz (Quad Core)
    • 8GB DDR3 Memory
    • Intel 320 Series 160GB SSD or Intel X25-M G2 160GB SSD
    • Optimus Graphics - NVIDIA Quadro 2000M 2GB and Intel HD 3000 Graphics (Disabled)

    • On-board Intel HD 3000 Graphics
    • Three USB 2.0 Ports
    • 12.5" HD 1366x768
    • 720P HD Webcam

First Generation Lenovo ThinkPad X1

I just found out that UniBeast works on the first generation Lenovo ThinkPad X1.  Also, the integrated Bluetooth 3.0 radio is natively supported and is most likely manufactured by Broadcom Corp.

The only caveat is that you will need to use a Bluetooth Apple Magic Mouse, Apple Wireless Keyboard, or Apple Magic Trackpad to get by the first screen. Or you can just plug in a USB keyboard or mouse... xD

I created a UniBeast flash drive by using the source from an Apple Store "OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive" and it contains Mac OS X Lion 10.7 Build 11A511A.  However, in some property list files it shows up as Build 11A511S.

Lastly, yes I did apply the MBR patch as provided by nawcom.  Just as a side note, the MBR patch for 10.7.2 provided by nawcom doesn't seem to work; I'm pretty sure that it's build specific.

Lenovo ThinkPad T420s, W520 and X220

I finally managed to find sometime to post here...

I've been following tonymacx86 and MacMan in terms of installing 10.6.8 and more recently 10.7.2.

What I'm attempting to do now is focus on portables, specifically the following laptops:
  • Lenovo ThinkPad T420s
  • Lenovo ThinkPad W520
  • Lenovo ThinkPad X220
Stay tuned, I'm about to fall asleep, I'll be updating regularly throughout the week.

Peace,

IanT
